Senses Wide Open The Art and Practice of Living in Your Body

Johanna Putnoi

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Johanna Putnoi
Johanna Putnoi is a self-employed dancer, writer and somatic educator who lectures and leads workshops, seminars and trainings in applied somatics, the movement arts, and the enneagram. She teaches throughout the United States and Europe and holds degrees from New York University and the American College in Paris.

For more than twenty years, Johanna Putnoi has worked to help people develop a new awareness and respect for their bodies' natural intelligence, their minds' natural clarity, and their inbom capacity for pleasure.

She has studied directly with seminal figures in her fields of interest: modem dance pioneer Martha Graham; educator Ivan Illich; mind/body trailblazers Moshe Feldenkrais and Robert K. Hall; and psychological/spiritual thinkers Helen Palmer, Carl Whitaker and Claudio Naranjo.

Presently Johanna leads on-going professional trainings and workshops in applied somatics, including an innovative class called, "Learning to Live with Senses Wide Open." She has taught at the prestigious Esalen Institute and the California Institute of Integral Studies. In May of 1998 she was the Teacher in Residence for Work/Study Scholars at Esalen.

Her work has given her the opportunity to teach topics such as Touch and the Art of Healing for the UCSF Medical Program, The Somatic Approach to Dance for a Stanford University master dance class and Somatic Work Through the Lens of the Enneagram for actors and screenwriters in Los Angeles.

Her book Senses Wide Open: The Art and Practice of Living in Your Body brings her philosophy to life with stories and valuable exercises.

*As you shake hands with a stranger, warmth and kinship seem to flow into you. Your body says, Pursue this relationship. You ten yourself I must be imagining things, and turn away. You go on a long walk and return home feeling refreshed. Your body says, That feels great. But when you look in the mirror, you say to yourself I'll never look the way I should. You pass a bakery and the smell of chocolate calls to every cell of your body. Your body says, Just a little chocolate would make me feel great right now. You tell yourself, I have absolutely no self-control. At home, you eat a carrot and feel miserable. Your lover's touch feels rough and insensitive. Your muscles tense, and you can't seem to get in a romantic mood. Your body says, I really don't like the way this feels. You tell yourself, There must be something wrong with me.

In its wisdom, our body is continually sending us signals. We know we should pay attention to them, but our mind takes over. We reject the body as wrong-too weak, too big, too fat, too old. So instead of listening to our body's natural wisdom, we do the exact opposite and then wonder why we don't feel better.

The human body comes equipped with a* brilliant physical response system that can tell us when to eat and when to rest, when to fight and when to run, who is dangerous and who will provide us a safe harbor. We are also born with an instinct to survive and prosper, to love and feel empathy for one another, to experience passion and pleasure. Johanna Putnoi's clear, refreshing voice embodies her down-to-earth message: "Your body is your home, what being human is all about. Living fully in your body will change your relationship to everything--to yourself, to others, and to the earth. You will be more aware of what you choose to put into your body, who you choose to share your body with, and how you treat the environment your body lives in."

In Senses Wide Open: The Art and Practice of Living in Your Body, Putnoi's refreshing prose and engaging exercises teach readers how to understand their bodies' language, soften body armor and drop old defenses, enjoy the world and unlock the gates to a full flow of pleasure, passion, and empathy. And there's a bonus: This strong, new, grounded connection between mind and body naturally creates a deeply compassionate connection with the larger body of the human community and with the earth.

Editors note: This book is for the now age. It speaks volumes without overwhelming a person. I highly recommend it. Margaret has read it and is now telling all of her friends about it..
