What Is Spirituality ?

by Johanna Carroll

It appears that the two "buzz" words of the '90's have become spirit and spirituality. Yet, these words, which have become a major part of our vocabulary, are at best sometimes allusive if not difficult to define. Exactly what does it mean to be spiritual? Is it a way of praying or practicing our belief system? Does going to church every week make us "spiritual"? How do we get points to determine our level of spirituality? Is one person more spiritual than another? Is it acceptable to teach under the name of "spirit" and yet not live a spiritual path? Is it hypocritical to wrap yourself in the banner of spirituality and rate yourself as more powerful or better than another? Exactly what does spiritual mean?

Ido not feel that I have all the answers in understanding these words. I do know that it is important to honor the light that Spirit puts before us. We should attempt to follow the guidance that light brings to us as best we can. It is an energy that can be felt externally and internally. It is a continual, conscious awareness that we are not alone. In following this light to the best of our abilities, one moment, one day, one week at a time; we honor the God-spark, or Spirit that lives within. The Spirit is the light that ignites the pathway of the soul towards eternal growth. This energy of Spirit is unique but not separate. The essence of Spirit is the driving force of our life experiences. It is unique for everyone. Our soul is as different as each snowflake that falls from the sky. It is like a piece of beautiful white lace that is hand woven by the angels, with the Spirit driving us forward within it's guiding light. The essence of Spirit is divine energy that co-creates divinity with humanity.

To live in the essence of spirituality is to be in the process of becoming, renewing and revealing each day. My own personal belief regarding spirituality is to allow the human, or material self to live in harmony with divinity. A co-existence and balancing between both sides of the veil. This appears to be a simple statement. Many times, this is a challenge of large proportion for the pilgrim on the path. The lessons of life can be likened to a twisted ball of string. If we allow the lessons to unravel slowly before us, and embrace and live the wisdom of the teachings, we are living in spirituality. The connection to God is not severed.

Many have tried to separate religion and spirituality. The main ingredient of religion is based on spirituality. To live in the Light of God; to live your faith, to walk your talk. We attend church services and listen to the sermons. Going to church once a week and attending services does not make you spiritual. Living your faith each day does.

Know that the way of the light is a direction you walk within. Be kinder to the Spirit side for it lives in the heavenly place within your heart.
